For broadcaster Stew Peters, Trey Gowdy is the perfect embodiment of what’s wrong with today’s conservatism.
“Trey Gowdy is the perfect politician for the Fox News and the Daily Wire-age of conservatism. He’s always in the news, but never seriously endangers the status quo,” Peters said in “The Stew Peters Show” Tuesday, Sept. 7, on Brighteon.TV.
He mentioned a website that collects clips from television news shows and said that if you search Gowdy’s name on its database, you will get over a thousand clips – the vast majority of which were on Fox News.
“Fox News is a 24-hour cable news channel that needs constant content to keep viewers engaged. The Benghazi probe was perfect for that,” Peters said.
That probe was headed by Gowdy when he was still a congressman. As the chairman of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, he built his name leading the investigation into the 2012 attacks against Americans in Benghazi, Libya.
The committee’s lengthy investigation into the attacks that killed the U.S. ambassador and three other Americans focused heavily on Hillary Clinton’s role as secretary of state.
The investigation revealed that Clinton used a private email server for government work, prompting a Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) investigation that proved to be an albatross in the Democrat’s 2016 presidential campaign. (Related: PROOF that Hillary Clinton got special treatment by the FBI, which exonerated her even though she committed serious crimes.)
It has stretched for years, so Fox News got what it needed: constant content. Gowdy also got what he needed: airtime. But in the end, Peters said, the probe didn’t matter at all.
Gowdy had also been involved in one of the House’s Russia investigations. He played an important role in the House Intelligence Committee’s investigation into Russian election interference and any possible coordination with Donald Trump’s presidential campaign.
“He wasted time on Benghazi and then admitted that it was a complete waste later. He supported the Russia probe and then defended the FBI,” Peters said. “And after the Capitol riot on January 6, Trey Gowdy went on Fox and blamed the president [Trump] for everything.”
The future doesn’t look good for the GOP at the moment.
“There’s a persistent pattern that the people who are presented to us as strong conservative warriors will ultimately let us down. They will betray us when it matters the most,” Peters said. He cited South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem and former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley as examples.
“Kristi Noem was great last year on [fighting against] lockdowns, so Fox and the Republicans made her a big star. But what have we seen this year? Bowing to the NCAA [National Collegiate Athletic Association] on transgender athletes and bowing to big business on vaccine mandates,” Peters said.
“Nikki Haley is the third most popular Republican contender for 2024 – think about that. Nikki Haley opposes regulating Big Tech and opposed Trump on Syria withdrawal. It’s clear that her position was driven by political expedience and bowing to cancel culture. That’s pathetic.”
Peters blamed the conservative mainstream media for the current state of conservative leadership in America. (Related: Public trust in mainstream media plummets as readers turn to independent news sources for truth reporting.)
“No doubt there are genuine America-first conservatives at Fox News, but overall it’s a for-profit company that has done very well over the last 25 years,” he said. “Fox News never does something radical that endangers the status quo. The status quo treats Fox News very nicely, and it treats well the other mainstream conservative sites too.”
He noted that Ben Shapiro does so well on Facebook precisely because everyone to the right of him is banished from the platform. The Daily Caller has the same incentives.
“Appeal to the base with cheap junk food conservatism – the conservatism of viral videos and Fox News hits,” Peters said. “No substance needed. Never demand too much of conservatives. Never hold them to account for their promises. Never push them too hard because that could kill the golden goose.”
Peters said the only way to protect the party, and ultimately America, is to refuse to play along with that charade.
“A decades-long psychological operation has been carefully planned out and right now is being implemented. We’ve been propagandized by a complicit media,” he said. “The big question is: Who can we trust?”
