The campaign of Vice President Kamala Harris is now smearing the name of a veteran in a futile attempt to defend Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz from accusations of stolen valor.
Less than a week after the Harris campaign announced its decision to have Walz as her running mate on Aug. 6, the governor immediately started being accused of stolen valor for promoting his military career even though he chose not to renew his service with the Minnesota Army National Guard right before his unit was set to be deployed to Iraq. In an attempt to deflect from the accusations against her running mate, the Harris campaign has instead chosen to go after United States Air Force veteran J.R. Majewski. Sen. J.D. Vance (R-OH), himself a veteran of the Marine Corps, endorsed Majewski when he chose to run in 2022 for Ohio’s ninth congressional district.
“Unearthed: J.D. Vance supported a congressional candidate who egregiously lied about his military service and claimed he was deployed to Afghanistan when he never was,” claimed the Harris campaign on posts circulated all over their social media profiles.
The accusations against Majewski are the same ones that helped derail his campaign in a race previously believed to be highly competitive, especially given that partisanship analyses indicate that the district leans slightly Republican.
It should be noted that the Air Force itself has cleared Majewski of the accusations against him when it admitted to improperly releasing his military records and failing to produce correct records to the groups who claimed Majewski stole valor right before the election. The Minnesota National Guard has not released a similar statement that could clear Walz of stolen valor charges.
Furthermore, rather than facing the accusations of stolen valor against Walz with either denials or admissions, the Harris campaign discreetly edited the governor’s biography to remove references to him being a “retired command sergeant major.”
Walz has repeatedly referred to himself as a retired command sergeant major. However, the Minnesota Army National Guard itself has confirmed this to be false, and his promotion was only conditional upon meeting certain criteria.
According to the Guard, upon Walz’s retirement, his final rank was that of a master sergeant, and the retirement benefits he receives as a veteran are the benefits received by other retired master sergeants. Walz did not meet the conditions to be promoted to a command sergeant major, and retired before being able to do so.
“[Walz] retired as a master sergeant in 2005 for benefit purposes because he did not complete additional coursework at the U.S. Army Sergeants Major Academy,” explained Lt. Col. Kristen Auge, public affairs officer from the Minnesota National Guard’s 34th Infantry Division. Army regulations dictate that failure to complete the criteria required for promotion results instead in a demotion.
The original biography for Walz on Harris’ campaign website – obtained through archived copies of the web page – claimed that Walz is “the son of an Army veteran and a retired Command Sergeant Major in the Army National Guard himself.” The updated version now describes Walz as having served as a command sergeant major while omitting the fact that he did not retire from the Guard with that rank.
Walz has also been accused of lying about having carried weapons “in war” even though he has never served in any active combat zone.
One viral video posted by the Kamala HQ account on X, formerly Twitter, featured Walz touting gun control and claiming that he is the right person to speak about guns as he is a gun owner and supposedly fought in a war.
“I spent 25 years in the Army, and I hunt … I’ve been voting for common-sense legislation that protects the Second Amendment, but we can do background checks,” said Walz in the video. “We can [implement] CDC research [on guns] … We can make sure that those weapons of war that I carried in war is the only place where those weapons are at.”
This claim tracks with Walz’s previous claims dating back nearly two decades that he is a veteran of Operation Enduring Freedom, the official name for America’s war on terror, which saw the U.S. Armed Forces for a decade send troops to multiple nations, including Afghanistan, Georgia, the Philippines and several nations in Central Asia, the Horn of Africa and the Sahara.
In a press release issued by his first campaign for the House of Representatives during the 2006 midterm election, Walz claimed to be a “veteran of Operation Enduring Freedom,” despite never being deployed out of the United States.
