As many suspected was the case, Joe Biden canceled a speaking engagement on July 17 at the last minute due to a health crisis that resulted in him being transferred to multiple different facilities for treatment.
Oversight Project pulled records through a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request showing that Biden was first supposed to be taken to a trauma center at the University Medical Center. He ended up being suddenly diverted straight to Harry Reid International Airport.
Three recordings, none of which are timestamped, outline the change in plans. Two of them are about four minutes each, both having come from local law enforcement in Las Vegas. The channels where these came from were not involved in Biden’s protective detail but were rather for shutting down traffic and securing the routes after plans changed.
The third recording came from an event channel for officers involved in Biden’s protective detail. This one is the longest of all, around 43 minutes – all of these recordings are available at RedState.com.

In the first two clips, you will hear officers responding to a Code 3, which means an emergency response. In the third at about the 21-minute mark, one of the officers is heard asking if another is available for a phone call.
“For everybody on the radio, right now they’re on a hold for something regarding the president,” is the next thing that is heard in the recording, followed by the same person instructing officers on the detail to allow some traffic to pass through local intersections while waiting for the next orders.
“For everyone on the radio, right now POTUS is 421,” the protective detail is then told in the recording.
“He’s being seen, so we’re just kinda waiting to see how this is shaping out. So, for everybody’s knowledge, he’s 421 right now; we’re just trying to figure out what’s going on and we’re gonna go from there.”
Code 421, by the way, means a person is sick or injured, according to the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department (LVMPD) code sheet.
For the next 20 minutes after that, there are sounds of hectic communication and coordination as Biden’s protective detail move its resources from the old route between Lindo Michoacan and the MGM Grand where Biden was originally supposed to speak to a secure route from Lindo Michoacan.
All three units, just to be clear, were informed that they needed to respond to a Code 3.
It is still unknown what happened to Biden that day or what his medical issue might have been. We do know that later that afternoon, the White House claimed that Biden “tested positive” for the Wuhan coronavirus (COVID-19), after which he disappeared for a while.
“We knew we were dealing with more of a medical issue – definitely trauma and any accidents were off the table,” commented Mason Van Houweling, the CEO of University Medical Center. “So again, we shifted gears to be able to address a medical need here at UMC.”
Biden never arrived at the hospital and was instead transported back to Delaware via Air Force One. LVMPD later released a statement claiming that the president was “sick,” but that was all they apparently knew about the matter.
“Earlier today following his first event in Las Vegas, President Biden tested positive for COVID-19,” Jean-Pierre later said in a statement.
“He is vaccinated and boosted and he is experiencing mild symptoms. He will be returning to Delaware where he will self-isolate and will continue to carry out all of his duties fully during that time.”
