To hear fired FBI Director James Comey tell it, he’s the most upright, honest official Washington has ever seen: An incorruptible, forthright, non-partisan public servant whose impeccable career was sidelined by a rogue, buffoonish cartoon of a president who had neither the experience nor the pedigree to become the leader of the free world.
Yes, to hear Comey tell it, the only thing that stood between national survival and utter chaos was him.
And, apparently, Hillary Clinton.
These are the only impressions we can glean following statements he made to the media on Monday after appearing before a closed-door session of the House Government Reform and Oversight Committee, the last opportunity the Republican majority will likely ever have to learn more about his handling of the Clinton email scandal and his involvement in Spygate — the Obama administration’s last-ditch effort to undermine POTUS Trump’s incoming administration.
But they didn’t learn much if anything at all. That’s because St. Comey deemed their questions unhelpful, partisan, and beneath him.
“I find it frustrating to be here, answering questions about things that are far less important than the values that this country is built upon,” Comey told reporters as he exited the hearing room on Capitol Hill. “I’d rather not be talking to you all (the press) but somebody has to stand up and speak for the FBI and the rule of law and I hope there’s a whole lot more somebodies out there than just me.
“So another day of Hillary Clinton’s e-mails and the Steele dossier,” he continued. “This, while the president of the United States is lying about the FBI, attacking the FBI, and attacking the rule of law in this country. How does that make any sense at all?
“Republicans used to understand that the actions of a president matter, the words of a president matter, the rule of law matters, and the truth matters. Where are those Republicans today?” he lectured. (Related: Mainstream media flushes last shred of credibility down the toilet with FAKE NEWS MARATHON over James Comey and Donald Trump.)
Considering that Comey served Democratic President Obama, who was perhaps the most dishonest, corrupt president in the history of the republic, those are pretty odd condemnations of the GOP.
Because it wasn’t Republicans (with the notable exception of the late Sen. John McCain) who launched Spygate. It wasn’t Republicans going to the FISA court with a bogus “dossier” paid for by a rival presidential campaign to get a warrant to spy on Team Trump. It wasn’t Republicans who unmasked scores of people tied to the Trump campaign. It wasn’t Republicans who lied to congressional investigators or leaked sensitive, perhaps classified, information to the media.
It wasn’t Republicans who trafficked in classified information and passed it through a hidden, private, unsecured email server. It wasn’t the GOP who deleted subpoenaed messages and it certainly wasn’t the GOP that broke laws in an attempt to undermine the will of the American electorate.
It wasn’t Republicans who devised a fake “Russian collusion” narrative.
No, all of those things were done by Democrats — and at least one Democratic apologist by the name of James Comey.
It’s beyond run-of-the-mill hypocrisy to hear Comey berate the president and his party about the “rule of law,” especially when he himself has likely violated it on a number of occasions. If we had a functional justice system, Comey wouldn’t be appearing before the House to regurgitate Deep State talking points, he’d be wearing prison stripes along with Clinton and several other Obama loyalists.
But we don’t, so we have to suffer through pious lecturing and finger-wagging from a man who has brought more distrust of the FBI and Justice Department than anyone not named Robert Mueller.
This two-track existence — the elitists like Comey who ‘get away with it’ and the rest of us who don’t — cannot last forever.
