InfoWars host Owen Shroyer denounced the mainstream media’s spreading of disinformation regarding Payton Gendron, the gunman responsible for the recent mass shooting in Buffalo, New York.
The 18-year-old Gendron shot 13 people at a Tops Friendly Market location on the morning of May 14, livestreaming his crime on the Twitch platform. Ten of the 13 died.
According to state officials, Gendron faces first-degree murder charges in state court, but could also face hate crime charges in federal court. The gunman from Conklin, New York – located 200 miles southeast of Buffalo – has pleaded not guilty to the crimes.
Prior to the shooting, Gendron published a manifesto that outlined his beliefs. It showed support toward other mass shooters – including Brenton Tarrant of the 2019 Christchurch mosque shooting in New Zealand, Anders Behring Breivik of the 2011 Utøya shooting in Norway and Dylann Roof of the 2015 Charleston church shooting in South Carolina.
However, he described his political affiliation as falling into the “mild-moderate authoritarian left category.” Gendron also expressed opposition toward conservative news outlet Fox News and Americans opposing U.S. military involvement in the Russia-Ukraine war in his manifesto.
Such views directly contradicted the narrative pushed by the mainstream media (MSM) that Gendron was a right-wing, conservative shooter. One article from Rolling Stone even described the 18-year-old mass shooter as a “prototypical Republican.”
Guest host Sean Stone, the son of filmmaker Oliver Stone, pointed this out to Shroyer during his appearance on Shroyer’s “War Room” program.
“They’ve got this Rolling Stone article, which literally is run the day after the shooting. Less than 24 hours later, you’ve already got this article coming out, basically saying he’s the prototypical Republican. It’s printed at 1:48 [p.m.] on Sunday, when the shooting took place on Saturday,” said the younger Stone.
Shroyer remarked: “What a leap. He is a mainstream Republican in the article, but self-described in his manifesto as a leftist, authoritarian eco-fascist. Does that sound like a mainstream Republican to you?”
Shroyer also pointed out how the MSM deliberately omits the race of mass shooters in their news reports unless the culprit is white, citing Gendron as an example.
“The media buries the race of murderers if they are not white, and they’ve got all kinds of different breakdowns of how they come to these conclusions. A white guy shooting black guys – that’s what those in the media want because they want racism in this country. They [want to] divide on race.” (Related: Media mostly ignore mass shooting at an Alabama school because the alleged shooter wasn’t white.)
An op-ed by the Washington Free Beacon lined up with this observation.
In an April 14 piece, Charles Fain Lehman noted how most news outlets make no mention of race if the shooter is Black. He cited a review done by the Free Beacon on hundreds of articles in major newspapers over the span of two years. According to the review’s findings, most newspapers “downplay the race of non-white offenders, mentioning their race much later in articles than they do for white offenders.” These same outlets “are also three to four times more likely to mention an offender’s race at all if he is White.”
“The data suggest an alarming editorial trend in which major papers routinely omit information from news reports, presenting readers with a skewed picture of who does and doesn’t commit crime,” noted Lehman. He also pointed out that these deliberate omissions of perpetrators’ races aim to “emphasize the view that the criminal justice system is racist at the root, perhaps at the expense of honesty about individual crimes.”
Aside from omitting the race of perpetrators from the stories, Lehman also noted how newspapers stopped publishing mugshot galleries for fear that these “may have reinforced negative stereotypes.” He also mentioned newspapers using more politically correct language – such as replacing the term “felon” with the phrase “formerly incarcerated person.”
