The thousands of people from around the world who will descend upon Egypt for the annual climate change conference hosted by the United Nations (UN) will be staying at luxury hotels and resorts.
The UN Climate Change Conference in 2022, also known as COP27, will begin on Sunday, Nov. 6, at Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt, near the southern tip of the Sinai Peninsula. The conference will continue for nearly two weeks and will feature more than 30,000 delegates, including representatives from almost every country in the world.
The UN chose to host the conference in Egypt because of the claim that Africa is one of the world’s regions that is most vulnerable to so-called climate change. A report by the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change even blamed the fact that nearly 17 million people in the continent – particularly in Ethiopia and Somalia – are facing acute food insecurity due to climate change.
This year’s summit will focus on three main issues: Reducing emissions, securing technical support for developing countries and helping countries most vulnerable to climate change prepare for and deal with its effects. As Steve Bonta of The New American pointed out, unlike major Egyptian cities like Cairo and Alexandria, Sharm El Sheikh was built up in recent decades by the Egyptian government to become a luxury tourist destination for the world’s richest.
“Like many such resorts in otherwise impoverished, despotic countries in the global south, Sharm El Sheikh is swathed in the sort of swanky luxuries that any reasonable elitist would expect to a gathering to address the plight of the poor,” wrote Bonta. “Glistening beaches, five-star hotels, shimmering tropical seas, first-class bars and restaurants – and swarms of military and police to guarantee a sanitized experience, safe from the unwashed masses of the local poor and radical street protesters alike.”
Even prominent left-wing climate activist Grea Thunberg will not be attending due to what she claims is the hypocrisy of holding such an event in a military dictatorship. Activists like Thunberg who initially wanted to attend COP27 noted that they have faced massive hurdles getting accreditation and finding accommodation.
Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi has even begun rounding up and detaining domestic climate protesters looking to exert pressure on conference delegates from the very far left. The few domestic and international activists who have received authorization to attend the conference have been given a tiny area far away from the conference area itself where they can protest.
“It’s theatrics,” said Hussein Baoumi, Egypt and Libya researcher for Amnesty International. “They don’t want to allow the right to protest or freedom of assembly, but they want to seem as though they are. It’s Sisi’s vision of a protest – you go to a place and register and protest for an hour where no one can see you, and then they have you on camera where the authorities can see if you say something they don’t like.”
As Bonta noted, this is all part of the UN’s latest attempt to carefully choreograph propaganda events to pressure nations “into accepting the extremist, anti-progress and anti-development creed of radical environmentalism.”
