Any Western talk of peace in the Ukraine conflict is merely a “decoy” as the United States and its allies remain intent on inflicting a strategic defeat on Moscow.
Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova made this claim after Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban visited Kyiv for the first time since the beginning of Russia’s special military operation in Ukraine.
During Orban’s visit, he urged Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to reach out to the Kremlin to seek a ceasefire to facilitate peace talks. Zelensky rejected Orban’s proposal, saying he believes in a different way to end the conflict.
Responding to this news, Zakharova said on a radio show that any discussions Ukraine and the West have that involve peace are mere “decoys, screens, tropes and memes.”
According to her, the Ukraine conflict is dominated by the goal of inflicting a strategic defeat on Russia, which the U.S. and its allies have declared “absolutely clearly and specifically.”
In practical terms, the West seeks to dismantle Russia and end its existence, she claimed.
Zakharova added that politicians in the European Union (EU) who are “clear-eyed” about the situation can see how they are being used in the U.S.’s “grand plan” regarding the Ukraine conflict, which is to turn the EU into a sacrificial animal on the altar of victory against Russia. Europe’s grim future is evident in the state of its economy, she said.
“What is happening to Europe is not just a crisis, or collapse or loss of position. It truly is a disaster,” she said.
Western officials like Hungary’s Orban probably want to set the record straight for the future generations of Europeans, who will blame the leaders of today for their inaction, Zakharova said. (Related: Hungary hops off “NATO Train,” calls West’s escalation of war in Ukraine “hopeless.”)
The Hungarian prime minister has repeatedly argued that Western sanctions imposed on Russia as punishment for the Ukraine conflict have failed to end hostilities and ended up hurting EU members more than they did Russia.
Budapest has used its veto power in the bloc to stop proposed restrictions that would have undermined core Hungarian national interests, such as its cooperation with Russia on nuclear energy.
Russian President Vladimir Putin has pledged to order a ceasefire with Ukraine as soon as Kyiv renounces its bid to join the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) and pulls all of its troops out of all territories in internationally recognized southern and southeastern Ukraine, which Moscow claims as its territory.
Back in May, Orban told public radio that the Russian military is waging “a serious and difficult war” against Ukraine, and its capabilities are “far exceeded” by NATO.
“If the Russians were strong enough to wrestle down the Ukrainians in one go, they would have done so already,” the Hungarian prime minister said. “I do not consider it logical that Russia, which cannot even defeat Ukraine, would all of a sudden come and swallow the Western world whole. The chances of this are extremely slim.”
The prime minister said that Hungary is committed to the mission of protecting NATO members but is concerned about funding and supplying weapons to Ukraine, as it is not a member of the alliance.
Orban claimed that NATO’s current direction may result in a clash with Russia, adding that Budapest is working to redefine its position in NATO so that it could refrain from any actions outside of the alliance’s territory.
“Our lawyers and officers are hard at work to see how Hungary can maintain its NATO membership in a way that it wouldn’t have to take part in NATO actions outside of NATO territory,” Orban said.
