President Donald Trump has accused Sen. Adam Schiff (D-CA) of engaging in a “sustained pattern” of possible mortgage fraud.
The chief executive called for justice in a fiery post on Truth Social Tuesday, July 15. “I have always suspected Shifty Adam Schiff was a scam artist,” Trump wrote. He pointed out that the senator for the Golden State had claimed being a Maryland resident despite representing California “to get a cheaper mortgage and rip off America.”
Trump also mentioned in his post that the Financial Crimes Division of the Federal National Mortgage Association – more commonly called Fannie Mae – concluded that Schiff “has engaged in a sustained pattern of possible mortgage fraud.” He continued: “Mortgage fraud is very serious, and Crooked Adam Schiff … needs to be brought to justice.”
The allegations, now under scrutiny by federal investigators, raise questions about favorable loan terms obtained under potentially false pretenses. They also mirror high-profile mortgage fraud cases, including the recent conviction of former Baltimore prosecutor Marilyn Mosby for false statements on a loan application.
Schiff and his wife purchased their Potomac, Maryland, home in 2003, securing a mortgage at a 5.625 percent interest rate by declaring it their primary residence. Refinancing filings in 2009, 2011, 2012 and 2013 reaffirmed this claim, yet Schiff simultaneously represented California in Congress. A spokesperson for the senator previously told CNN that Schiff’s properties in both Maryland and California were “occupied throughout the year,” distinguishing them from a vacation home.
Meanwhile, the Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA) referred Schiff to the Department of Justice (DOJ) for possible prosecution. It cited media reports and the Fannie Mae’s probe, which concluded Schiff may have misrepresented the occupancy status of his Maryland home across multiple loan transactions from 2009 to 2020.
According to a letter obtained by Fox News, FHFA Director Bill Pulte cited concerns over falsified bank documents and property records. He mentioned that Schiff claimed a homeowner’s tax exemption on his California apartment as his primary residence, suggesting conflicting declarations. Pulte warned that such misconduct could violate federal laws prohibiting wire fraud, bank fraud and false statements to lenders.
Schiff dismissed the allegations as politically motivated retribution, noting Trump’s past calls for his arrest over claims of treason. “This baseless attempt at political retribution won’t stop me from holding him accountable,” Schiff posted on X in response to Trump’s Truth Social post.
The clash underscores deepening divisions in Washington, where Schiff – a key figure in Trump’s impeachments and the Russia collusion hoax – has long been a target of Republican scrutiny. With constitutional implications for the rule of law amid partisan prosecutorial threats, this case reflects broader concerns about accountability, residency standards for lawmakers and the weaponization of financial oversight. (Related: Adam Schiff, who aggressively pushed “Russian collusion” hoax, is now pushing Big Tech to censor all vaccine truth.)
Whether the DOJ pursues charges remains uncertain. But the allegations against Schiff, a longtime foe of Trump since his first term, add another layer to the nation’s polarized legal and political landscape where truth and retribution increasingly blur.
